Chicago Degree Completion Program

Update on the program

It is with great sadness that I must announce that, having completed admission for the fall semester of 2009, we will no longer accept new students into the Chicago Horticulture BS degree completion program. We will offer all the courses needed for current students to complete the degree, but we have not had the student interest necessary to make this program sustainable. Therefore, barring a dramatic change in student interest, we will be phasing out this program after the students in the program have had the opportunity to take all the classes required for this degree. For students in the program, it is imperative to take the courses as they are available since they may not be offered again in the Chicago area. I wish to thank all of the students who have enrolled in our program, and want them to know that we will work with them to complete the degree program and pursue a successful horticultural career.

Bruce Branham
Interim Head
Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences

What is a Degree Completion Program?

The Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences (NRES), in partnership with the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences (ACES) and the Office of Continuing Education (OCE), now offers an innovative bachelor’s degree completion program in horticulture for working professionals and community college students in the Chicago area. If you have thought about getting your bachelor’s degree in order to advance your career opportunities, or are changing careers and want a second bachelor’s degree, this may be the program for you!

With a direct economic impact of $4.72 billion in 2003, the Illinois ‘green industries’ are growing rapidly and 25% of the service sector industries report that they are unable to fill all of their open jobs. U of I horticulture courses will prepare you for a career in the “green industry” and our on-campus faculty and well-qualified adjunct faculty will teach these courses at locations convenient to you in the Chicago area. Get hands on experience at the Chicago Botanic Garden, The Morton Arboretum, and the Multi-University Center in Oak Brook.

The horticulture curriculum requirements are identical to the on-campus program, ensuring you the same quality and rigor that Urbana campus students receive. You will take your final 70 credit hours of coursework to earn your bachelor’s degree in horticulture, building upon your community college coursework. You can find the degree requirements at horticulture curricula requirements. For guidance in selecting community college courses that will transfer to UIUC, please see an academic advisor at your community college or request a curriculum planning guide from us. Our staff is available to review your academic goals and accomplishments to date, and help you step-by-step through the seemingly complicated transfer process. Information related to admissions, financial aid, course enrollment and registration, books, location, etc., is located on this website via links to the Office of Admissions and Records, and the Office of Academic Outreach. If you don’t find your answers here, please contact NRES Student Services Coordinator Piper Hodson at phodson@uiuc.edu and she will direct you to the proper department.
