Areas of Expertise
Soil & Water Quality, Pest Management, Ornamental Horticulture

Professor Wilkinson was trained in plant pathology, biochemistry and soil physics, and his program at the University of Illinois continues to reflect these basic sciences. For over 20 years he has focused his research on the pathogens of grasses. Of particular interest are pathogens of the roots, i.e., soilborne. The soilborne pathogen Gaeumannomyces has received the bulk of his research effort. This species is pathogenic to most grasses. Wilkinson's research has addressed taxonomic, etiologic, and management objectives for this very important pathogen and the diseases that it causes. Currently, efforts include determining the genetic variance among species and varieties of Gaeumannomyces, the role that melanin and other pigments play during pathogenesis for the determination of virulence, and the development of integrated turfgrass management for take-all patch diseases.

In addition to his mycological studies, Wilkinson researches several other subjects specific to turfgrass science: the production and use of sod, the development of new turf germplasm, and the use of soil amendments and other organic materials for rootzone modification.

His research is supported by many different commercial, private and governmental organizations. Working with Professor Wilkinson are graduate students, technicians, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists. The physical facilities under the direction of Professor Wilkinson are fully equipped for mycology, molecular biology and plant pathology. In addition, Professor Wilkinson is the director of a 16-acre turfgrass research center.

Professor Wilkinson maintains a strong involvement in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels. In addition, he is a co-author on the textbook "Controlling Turfgrass Pests" and the cd "Interactive Turf."

Professor Wilkinson is the premier consultant for the production, use and management of grass for baseball fields. He was the lead consultant on the new stadiums and renovations for the Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Detroit Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals. He is also considered a world expert on the science and use of sodded turf. His expertise has taken him to several foreign countries, including Japan, Egypt, England, France, Belgium, Holland, and Canada.
